The 2011 UK + Eire Tour has come to an end. It has been a great journey and experience for us and everyone who has helped us along the way. This has been the best year so far! Shout outs to our acts this year,Altimet and monoloQue for putting on a great show, for being a good sport despite all the difficulties we faced during the trip. we hope you guys had fun!

DAY 8 | Dublin Gig!

Sorry for the late late update but we've been constantly updating the Facebook fan page so I suggest you follow us there.

Anyway, we've had two gigs so far and the response have been great! We had a record attendance of 390 people for the Warwick gig and everyone had an awesome time.

We were in Nottingham over the weekend and had an intimate set there. The crowd that attended both gigs were very supportive and 'layan gila'!!!

Before we left for Dublin yesterday, the team had an off day so the MonoloQue party went down to Liverpool while the Knuke team went to Manchester. We will update with pictures soon!

Today is the Dublin gig, the penultimate leg of the tour.

For those who have no clue what the hell is KNUKE, there’s a very simple answer to that. These are a bunch of passionate, local music loving people who are dedicated to exposing and growing the Malaysian music scene. Kugiran Negara ke UK Enterprise (KNUKE) started as a novelty project by enthusiastic fans to bring independent band Hujan to the UK in 2008 but has evolved into a more professional and organised group.

Aside from Hujan, KNUKE has also brought Estrella, Seven Collar T-Shirt and Couple to the UK. This year, building on the “Rock Nusantara” theme that basically revolves around artists who proactively include elements of the Malaysian sound into their music, KNUKE will be bringing two Malaysian superstars who are no doubt at the top of their game to UK.

Altimet and Monoloque will be bringing our culture and our sound to the eyes and ears of the English at the same time proving what we have already proved countless times; we have equal if not better talent.

Throughout this tour, they will play 4 shows that span across the UK. Their first stop will be the Copper Room at the Warwick University, followed by a show at the House of Coco Tang in Nottingham, a show at Twisted Pepper in Dublin and finally they rock London at Easy J’s, UCL.

If you somehow do not know who Altimet and Monoloque are, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!

Altimet is formerly from the Malaysian groundbreaking hip-hop group Teh Tarik Crew. Since going solo, he has spawned commercially successful hits such as “Chantek”, “Syukur” and “Kotarayaku” featuring Noh Hujan. It is his Malaysian sound infused tracks that have made him a prominent figure in the local hip-hop scene.

Monoloque is the brainchild of Loque formerly of Butterfingers, one of Malaysia’s rock legends. The band recently released a chart-topping hit which featured local songstress Atilia called “Kekanda Adinda”. Frontman Loque is a firm believer in the local arts and the talents we have to offer.

Rapper Altimet and alternative rock outfit monoloQue to bring Malaysian independent music forward with a British tour this month.

TALK about a genre clash abroad. Homegrown hip hop and alternative rock will headline the fourth edition of the KNUKE tour (Kugiran Negara United Kingdom Enterprise) which sees acclaimed rapper Altimet (formerly of Teh Tarik Crew) and rock quartet monoloQue slated for shows in England and Ireland later this month.

Formed in 2007, KNUKE, an independent collective aiming to expose local independent music abroad, has built up strong ties with Malaysian student organisations in Britain. Loosely speaking, it has developed an annual touring network there and the past three editions have seen indie-centric acts like Hujan (2008), Sevencollar T-shirt and Estrella (2009), and Couple (2010) taking on British shows.

“It’s been a struggle to get the tour going every year. Sponsorship is a big issue. But we’ve pushed hard to secure another tour and this instalment with Altimet and monoloQue also allows us to bring a different variety of local music to Britain,” said Iedil Putra Alaudin, one of the co-founders of KNUKE.

Essentially run by a group of former graduates from Britain (who organised Hujan’s first British tour in 2008), KNUKE’s committee features members from the marketing, theatre, architecture and airline service circles.

“In short, we’re all music fans ... just crazy enough to take it a step further by organising this tour series,” he added.

Tour mania: Altimet (right) and Loque will be playing shows in England and Ireland later this month.

Considered veterans of the local scene, Altimet and monoloQue, will be playing three dates in Warwick, Nottingham and London in England alongside a gig in Dublin, Ireland, starting from Feb 18 to Feb 26.

The Dublin show on Feb 23 is a bonus this time around with support from the Orang Kita collective (who also brought Search to Dublin last year). Driven solely by ticket sales and profit-sharing with gig partners, these four shows will be the foundation to finance the tour budget from venue to venue. Each venue has an average capacity of 300 to 500, which the KNUKE organisers are confident of filling up based on past records. In terms of the acts, there will be a lot of new music from monoloQue and a solo career-spanning set from Altimet.

“The full band will head out for this tour and with the monoloQue debut (Hikayat Halimunan Abad Ke-21) scheduled in mid-year, the fans in England and Dublin will enjoy a sneak preview of what we have to offer,” said Loque, the frontman of monoloQue.

As for Butterfingers material (Loque’s other band, now on hiatus), a few selections from albums like Selamat Tinggal Dunia and Kembali look like strong possibilities for the tour sets ahead.

Always the party-starter, Altimet has a mixture of Malay and English language tracks to take to the masses in Britain.

“It’s a big break for local hip hop and I’m sure there will be enough fans to enjoy what I’m bringing to the tour,” said Altimet, who has been responsible for some of the most soulful homegrown hip hop hits (Syukur, Chantek, Kotaraya Ku) in recent times.

While the Kuala Lumpur entourage will supply the main acts, the support team in Britain has put the promos for this month’s shows in place. KNUKE will also go ahead with its own solely organised show for the Nottingham leg.

“We have Malaysian students volunteering help – in terms of lodging (student dorms, B&B outlets) and handling the groundwork like gig publicity and opening acts,” said Iedil.

So how will this touring party get to Britain?

“All the long haul flight tickets have been supplied by AirAsia X, so that gives us a headstart in terms of travel. We’re not managing a five-star tour here – all we have are connections with friends and independent promoters in Britain and our contacts with the local independent acts here, it’s basically all about DIY arrangements,” noted Iedil.

Despite Altimet and monoloQue’s mainstream celebrity status here, the best thing about working with such independent acts is “their willingness to sacrifice” nearly two weeks living rough on the road in Britain.

“We’re expecting cold weather, but luckily, we’ve had enough experience here with the Malaysian rain,” concluded Loque candidly.

PETALING JAYA: Kumpulan MonoloQue dan penyanyi rap Altimet akan membuat persembahan di sekitar United Kingdom dan Ireland dalam siri jelajah yang dinamakan UK And Eire Tour bermula 18 Febuari depan.

Siri jelajah ini akan diadakan di empat lokasi utama bermula di Warwick, diikuti Nottingham dan Dublin. London pula akan menjadi lokasi penutup persembahan mereka pada 25 Februari.

Altimet yang sedang mencipta nama melalui lagu hit, Syukur, menyatakan bahawa dia sangat berbesar hati untuk turut serta di dalam siri persembahan itu dan akan menjanjikan persembahan yang terbaik untuk audiens di sana.

"Saya akan mempersembahkan sepuluh hingga dua belas lagu malah DJ Fuzz akan turut serta di dalam persembahan saya nanti," jelas Altimet apablia ditemui pada sidang akhbar yang berlangsung di The Bee, Jaya One, di sini, Rabu.

"Agak terkejut dan saya tertanya-tanya kepada diri sendiri kenapa mereka memilih saya untuk membuat persembahan di sana?

"Peluang seperti ini jarang datang kepada artis tempatan dan saya tidak mahu melepaskannya," jawab Altimet apabila ditanya tentang reaksi mengenai jemputan membuat persembahan di kota-kota negara Inggeris itu.

Bagi Loque dari kugiran MonoloQue pula, ini merupakan pengalaman baru bagi kumpulannya yang popular dengan lagu Jika Aku Seorang Robot dan Kekanda Adinda itu.

"Walaupun dijangkakan kebanyakan penonton adalah terdiri daripada pelajar dan warga Malaysia di sana, kami tetap optimis dan memandang siri gig ini sebagai satu titik permulaan untuk mengembangkan bakat dan karya kami di negara luar," kata Loque yang merupakan vokalis kumpulan itu.

"Kami sangat teruja untuk membuat persembahan di sana dan kami akan membawa satu elemen baru di dalam persembahan-persembahan kami," jelas MonoloQue yang akan membawa 12 lagu hit dan lagu baru mereka.

Kumpulan Negara ke United Kingdom (KNUKE) adalah organisasi yang menjadi tulang belakang di dalam siri jelajah ini.

KNUKE telah berjaya membawa kumpulan-kumpulan indie seperti Hujan, Estrella, Seven Collar t-Shirt, dan Couple membuat persembahan di negara itu sejak 2008.

"Matlamat kami adalah untuk meneruskan usaha menonjolkan bakat-bakat muzik indie tempatan di luar negara dan langkah membawa Altimet untuk turut serta membuat persembahan di UK adalah untuk menambahkan variasi di dalam siri jelajah ini," kata Rashdan Harith, salah seorang pengasas KNUKE.

"KNUKE bekerjasama dengan dua pertubuhan masyarakat Malaysia di United Kingdom iaitu Warwick Malaysian Society dan UCL Msoc untuk menjayakan persembahan MonoloQue dan Altimet di sana.

"Selain itu, kami juga telah membuat promosi melalui temu ramah di beberapa stesen radio dan media cetak di United Kingdom," tambah Harith.

Earlier today we were at KNUKE press conference on their upcoming UK and Eire tour. KNUKE as an organization has been bringing local acts overseas to perform at venues all around United Kingdom for Malaysian students and locals aboard. This year, they are bringing two local music act, Monoloque and Altimet.

Kugiran Negara Unites Kingdom Enterprise (KNUKE) starts out as a group of Malaysian students studying abroad who wanted to see their favorite local independent act perform in U.K. They first started by with the band Hujan back in 2008 and since have successfully brought Estrella, Seven Collar T-Shirt and Couple on tour all around U.K.

This year, 2011 KNUKE is bringing two well known local acts Monoloque and Altimet and they are expanding their reach by adding Dublin, Ireland on the tour stop list. Tour starts 16th February 2011 and ends 27th February 2011. They’ll be visiting Copper Room – Warwick University, House of Coco Tang – Nottingham, Twisted Papper – Dublin and Easy J’s UCL – London.

You really can’t write about MonoloQue without mentioning Butterfingers, one of Malaysia’s legendary grunge band. Started as a side project for Loque of Butterfingers, MonoloQue now has become more of its own. There is nothing grunge about them at all. With MonoloQue it feels that they are trying to push the envelope of what musically possible. Emphasizing more on effects and distortions they have a very post-rock-broken-radio feel to it.

Altimet on the other hand have been busting rhymes in the local hip hop scene for quite some time. He is also part of one of the most notorious hip hop group at that time, the Teh Tarik Crew. As a solo artist he had collaborated with quite a few talented artist and musicians. He also was crowned as the Best Hip Hop Solo Act at the Voize awards. Previously KNUKE has been bringing only rock bands, Altimet is the first hip hop artist on the KNUKE list.

Sure these bands and artist that KNUKE brings isn’t playing at big U.K. festival, but you got to start from somewhere right? As mentioned at the press conference, although it might seem that most of the crowds are Malaysian students, but they are bringing their friend, the locals and other foreign students. A good way to showcase our local music.

There will be opening acts on each venue by local artists and musicians. This gives the chance for musicians to network. Sure websites like Facebook and MySpace lets you network with other musicians beyond our border, but nothing beats face-to-face networking.

Throughout the journey, they’ll have videologs posted on Gua.com.my so that we here in Malaysia can follow the updates. More info on this when it’s available.

Also during the press conference KNUKE had briefly mentioned about other projects they are doing, one of them is a podcast series. We love podcasts! Will be watching for updates.

Persembahan bergerak Altimet, Monoloque di UK

UNITED Kingdom (UK) merupakan antara negara yang menjadi tumpuan ramai penyanyi dari seluruh dunia termasuklah Malaysia bagi mengembangkan karier mereka kerana mempunyai pasaran muzik yang besar.

Altimet dan kumpulan Monoloque adalah dua kumpulan tempatan yang akan mengorak langkah itu selepas sekian ramai penyanyi lain yang pernah mencuba nasib dengan mengadakan siri persembahan bergerak di sana.

Menurut Altimet, tawaran yang diterimanya daripada sebuah agensi yang dikenali sebagai Kugiran Negara Ke UK bagi mengadakan persembahan-persembahan bergerak di negara itu sukar untuk dilepaskannya begitu sahaja.

“Ini adalah kali pertama saya dijemput mengadakan persembahan di empat buah bandar di UK iaitu Warwick, Nottingham, Dublin dan London mulai 16 sehingga 28 Februari ini bersama kumpulan Monoloque.

“Saya sukar melepaskan undangan itu kerana ini adalah salah satu cara saya menimba pengalaman selain mengintai peluang dalam bidang nyanyian di negara seperti UK yang terkenal dengan industri muziknya di dunia.

“Saya teruja untuk mengadakan persembahan-persembahan ia merupakan tempat yang paling penting pernah saya adakan setakat ini,” katanya kepada Hits sewaktu dihubungi di Kuala Lumpur baru-baru ini.

Jelas penyanyi pop, R&B dan hip hop ini, dia berasa bertuah kerana menjadi antara penyanyi tempatan yang diberi peluang oleh Kugiran Negara Ke UK mengadakan persembahan berbayar di negara tersebut.

Katanya, undangan itu berdasarkan populariti yang sedang diraihnya selain atas permintaan ramai peminat termasuklah para pelajar Malaysia yang kini sedang melanjutkan pengajian mereka di kebanyakan bandar utama di UK.

“Saya difahamkan ini adalah tahun keempat Kugiran Negara Ke UK menganjurkan persembahan bergerak untuk para penyanyi dari Malaysia.

SEMENTARA itu, vokalis dan gitaris Monoloque, Loque turut teruja dengan jemputan daripada Kugiran Negara Ke UK yang disifatkannya sebagai peluang keemasan bagi mereka menorak langkah lebih jauh dalam bidang muzik.

Apatah lagi ujar bekas gitaris kumpulan Butterfingers itu, Monoloque kini sedang dalam proses menerbitkan album sulung mereka berjudul Hikayat Halimunan Abad Ke-21 yang mengandungi tujuh buah lagu.

“Bagi saya, ini adalah peluang kami untuk mempromosikan lagu-lagu dalam album itu di UK nanti. Antara lagu yang akan kami persembahkan di sana nanti bertajuk Badang Kotaraya dan Penghormatan Terakhir.

“Namun, kami juga akan menyanyikan lagu-lagu lama Butterfingers seperti Mati Hidup Kembali. Ini kerana saya yakin ramai yang mengenali Butterfingers berbanding Monoloque yang baru ditubuhkan beberapa tahun lalu,” jelasnya.

Hikayat Halimunan Abad Ke-21 yang dirakamkan di Studio Kilang Menjahit Bunyi milik Loque itu yang akan disiapkan selewat-lewatnya pada hujung tahun ini katanya akan disiapkan secara berperingkat-peringkat.

Kesibukan dengan pelbagai aktiviti termasuklah setelah menjayakan Konsert Analoque - Ana Raffali dan Monoloque di Lambang Sari, Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur pada Disember tahun lalu menyebabkan rakaman album itu perlahan.

“Sekarang ini tumpuan kami adalah untuk empat persembahan Monoloque di UK nanti bersama-sama Altimet. Kami sudah mula berlatih sejak seminggu lalu selama dua jam tiga atau empat kali seminggu.

“Antara fokus kami adalah lagu-lagu terbaru Monoloque seperti Penghormatan Terakhir dan Kita Semua Perlukan Cinta yang akan dipersembahkan dalam persembahan kami di UK nanti,” katanya.

This year 2011 is an exciting year for the good people of Kugiran Negara United Kingdom Enterprise, or as they are affectionately known KNUKE, as it marks the 4th year of bringing in local acts to the United Kingdom. What began as a quirky project by enthusiastic students to bring Malaysian indie acts to the UK in 2008 has since morphed into an annual event, showcasing the latest in the Malaysian alternative music scene.

After the success of its first concert, a five stop tour around the UK featuring chart toppers Hujan, KNUKE has gone on to bring other local indie performers such as Estrella and Seven Collar T-shirt in 2009 (in collaboration with Laguna Records), while their 2010 tour brought internationally acclaimed power pop band Couple to the UK. KNUKE Tour 2011 looks set to be yet another memorable one as KNUKE are bringing in two distinctly unique performers, rapper Altimet and experimental rockers monoloQue.

Hello everyone,

The title says it all. But if you look closely there's definitely something different with the title. Something different as compared to our previous tours..

Can't figure it out?

It is the inclusion of Republic of Ireland into the tour!

In lieu of our progress and expansion, we have decided to cross the Irish Sea and collaborate with our good friends in Dublin to have a gig there! This is going to be huge and exciting!

We at KNUKE are busy preparing for the tour and we will post new updates and tour development from time to time.

Hey everyone!

COUPLE have returned from their UK Tour safely, Alhamdulillah! and reports are in, they played some rocking shows across Manchester,London and Liverpool.

We at KNUKE would like to give a quick shout out to Air Asia X, our airline partner and all our other sponsors and friends who have supported this year's tour.

We also would like to thank Couple for being the consummate professionals and soldiering on despite some setbacks, speaking of which we would like to also extend our deepest condolences and prayers for Masrin's family.

To all fans of Couple and those following the KNUKE UK Tour 2010,

We have some unfortunate news.

Upon arrival in Manchester, Masrin, Couple's bassist was informed that his mother who is currently ill was admitted to the ICU back in KL. Naturally, with this information and upon deliberation with Couple, Masrin has decided to go back to KL and be with his mother and family during this time. As of now, he is en route back to Malaysia.

However, in true form of professionalism, Couple have managed to acquire a sessionist for their tour and will continue with their scheduled performances.

In the meantime, KNUKE would like to wish Masrin's mother a quick recovery and our prayers are with him and his family.

Lets all pray for the family and insyaAllah, things will take a turn for the better.

As for the tour, Couple live in Manchester will go on as scheduled tonight. Here is to a good show!

Indie band Couple is the latest in line to take Malaysian music to Britain.

IT’S shows in Manchester, London and Liverpool in the next 12 days for indie power pop outfit Couple. The big dream and trip is on for one of the local indie scene’s hardest working bands.

The band’s MySpace gig listings page has proudly put up those English dates, the quartet’s first British tour. Organised by Kugiran Negara Ke UK Enterprise (aka KNUKE), a loose collective of current/former Malaysian students who studied abroad, Couple’s upcoming shows follow in the footsteps of similar gigs in England by Hujan, Seven Collar T-Shirt and Estrella in the last two years.

“As an independent concern, it’s great that KNUKE has kept this tour programme going with AirAsia X’s assistance (flight tickets). The groundwork is there (in England), especially with a keen Malaysian student population in support,” said Aidil Rusli, 32, Couple frontman, who himself read law in London over 10 years ago.

“This is great exposure and experience for any band. During my student days in England, there were no such opportunities for local indie acts.”

Couple’s tour setlist will include current material from Pop Tak Masuk Radio as well as favourites from Teenage Disc Fantastic and Top Of The Pop.

The band, completed by guitarist Ariana, 27, bassist Masrin, 22, and drummer Shahrin, 21, will kick off the Brit tour in the north-west of England.

It plays the Students’ Union hall, University of Manchester this Friday before heading to The Backroom@ Bumper in Liverpool next Tuesday.

The trip to Liverpool will double up as a pilgrimage for The Beatles-inspired band, with Aidil noting that a Fab Four sightseeing tour is on the cards.

“The Beatles museum right to Mendips and the Cavern Club, we’ll try to fit all of that in while in Liverpool!”

Always a band not to rely on free rides, Couple has also gone the extra mile to organise more shows, enquired about Brit music magazine interviews (Artrocker, Stool Pigeon, etc) and album distribution options.

“Outside the KNUKE dates, we have arranged two extra shows in London,” revealed Aidil, who contacted London promoters and venues himself.

“It was a long shot, but we kept our fingers-crossed. It’s just a question of knocking on doors and ... well, you never know, someone might be interested in the music,” he added.

His initiative has not gone unrewarded. Couple is booked to play two self-organised shows in London; The Stag’s Head this Sunday and The Windmill next Wednesday. The band completes the tour with a KNUKE finale show at The Fiddlers in London on March 28.

From Stansted, they will travel straight to Manchester and will gear up for their first gig this Friday at the Main Hall, Students' Union, University of Manchester.

Shane Beales is one of the most positive people you will ever meet. He writes songs that combine unbridled honesty with (what he would call) sharp wit, emotional intelligence and what friends describe as 'epic' musical courage. His sound is a blend of intricate multi-layered textures and strong soaring melodies with plenty of unexpected twists and turns.

Shane Beales grew up living in England and Australia. Part of a very musical family and surrounded by instruments of all shapes and sizes, it was percussion that most grabbed Shane's attention.In '99, he moved from Melbourne to the Essex countryside. Separated from his drum-kit and with little else to do, Shane assaulted the piano daily and found himself almost constantly writing new songs. It was here he discovered and honed his love of writing.

Relocating from Colchester to Liverpool, Shane has continued to write and perform, amassing an impressive and ever-growing catalogue of songs. He has so far independently released two albums "I'll repair your mistakes" (with his former-band Baby Ingrid) and "Delight in You" and 3 EP's. Most recently he embarked on and completed his most ambitious songwriting project to date: "Project 52" the challenge to write, record and release a new song every week for a year.

Someone's Daughter is a pop/rock band fronted by two female singers, Lauren Hubbard and Eirini Devitt. The duo have highly commercial songs co-written with Terry Ronald (Girls Aloud, Dannii and Kylie Minogue, Sophie Ellis Bexter) and produced by Yak Bondy (Emma Bunton, Mel C, S Club 7, Amy Studt)

Someone's Daughter have been compared to the likes of Pink, The Veronicas, Paramore and Miley Cyrus. The duo along with their band will guarantee to put on a good show with their high energy songs and performance.
Both girls have had intense singing/dancing training throughout their life - Lauren most recently studied on the Master Performance Course at Vocaltech and Eirini has just completed a 3 year Musical Theatre Course at Stella Mann.

Exciting and stressful!

That's just how we feel generally here at HQ. All chapters are up and running, updating event pages and stepping up on promotions. Couple are in the midst of preparing for the tour as well even though they have a tight schedule with gig invites every other weekend. But they are happy and looking forward to the trip!

Speaking of promotions, we will be making an appearance on Malaysia Hari Ini at 8.30am this coming Tuesday, 2nd March 2010 on TV3 (for those outside Malaysia, you can catch the interview via catch up tv on www.tv3.com.my right after the program).

Official tour t-shirts will be out soon as well! Design progress has been great and all I can say now, its looking good! There are only a limited number of t-shirts. Updates on price and how to purchase will be posted up on the website.

This is just the most AMAZING news! Malaysia’s premier power poppers Couple will be on tour in the UK come March 2010. I will let Couple leader Aidil give us the dirt himself -

We’re being brought there by Malaysian students studying in the UK, they’ve this organisation called KNUKE. We’ll be going from the 17th-29th March 2010.
The KNUKE kids have set up 3 shows for us there in Manchester, Liverpool and London. We’ve managed to get 2 extra gigs for, one at the Dirty Water Club night (a longstanding garage rock night that’s been going in since 1996 – their claim to fame includes doing the eary London shows for The White Stripes and of course having legends like The Monks and current garage darlings like King Khan, Jay Reatard (RIP) and The Black Lips regularly play at their nights).
The other extra show we’ve managed to get is at this small pub called The Windmill in Brixton, who seem to have made quite a name for itself as a great venue (The Independent named it one of the Top Ten Venues In The UK and past performers have included so many great acts like Stereolab, Shonen Knife, Daniel Johnston, The Magic Numbers right up to hip and current acts like Bloc Party, The Cribs, Yeasayer, Archie Bronson Outfit, British Sea Power and so many more).

Biography

The basket full of music that spills into our songs tastes like something between the crunch of early Kings of Leon and melodies peeled from the Maccabees. There is a raw energy to a guitar driven sound which is sounding more recognisable as 'The Stowaways' with every note played and skin hit.

The Stowaways have built their sound on a solid foundation of catchy indie rock, maintaining an importance in developing the whole package around the music.
The past two years have seen the growth of the band, branching out from a filled schedule of gigs, to videos, artwork and writing.

Since summer '09, the band has had a fresh boost, grasping the artistic values they want to project. Currently the band are submersed in writing and recording new material crafting a new depth to their songs. The release of their first single - "Fever", at the O2 Academy Islington (Dec '09) gave a fresh momentum, inspiring the band to spend the beginning of 2010 with new material as their priority.

The Stowaways hope to hit the gig circuit in March, having pushed themselves towards a level above, one more towards the ambition that lies ahead...

ABOUT THE BAND

After a number of years in and around the Leeds Music Scene under various guises, The Beat Marshalsformed at the back end of 2007 when Dan Schofieldand fellow guitarist Chris Simpson collaborated to create a fresh dynamic sound.

Drummer James Turton - having worked with the two guitarists in a previous outfit - completed the line up, and in October 2008 The Beat Marshals unleashed their high energy progressive indie rock onto the Leeds Music Scene.

With a solid foundation based on dedication, self-belief and no fear to tread into the unfamiliar, The Beat Marshals distinctively fuse elements of 70’s riff based rock, grunge, old school British indie and contemporary electronica, driven by intense beats and thunderous bass whilst demonstrating breathtaking melodious qualities.

In May 2009, Naz Nordin joined The Beat Marshalson bass guitar to offer the band his distinctive playing style, combining pulsing grooves with slick riffs. Naz is already proving his worth as a real asset to the band.

The Beat Marshals took part in the 2009 Surface Unsigned Festival where they reached the semi-final stage held at Club Academy, Manchester.

In December 2009, The Beat Marshals gave their first local radio interview on Pheonix FM, Halifax.

The Beat Marshals continue to build on the strong impression they have created on the unsigned music circuit.

In order to fine tune our Uk Tour episode this year, KNUKE along with mutual agreements with bands Pesawat and Couple have agreed to only bring COUPLE for this year while we postpone any possibilities of bringing Pesawat to next year.

This year's tour shall be titled 'COUPLE UK TOUR 2010'. The tour will be lead, headlined, and performed by the one and only power-pop veterans COUPLE. With their groovy style of live performance and recommendation from the Rolling Stones magazine as the top25 bands on myspace worldwide, we are definitely sure that this is the best single band to represent the thriving Malaysian independent music movement.

In 2008 we have brought you the band HUJAN to tour a series of gigs in UK.

In 2009 we upped the ante by bringing the sexy bossa nova act ESTRELLA and indie veterans SEVEN COLLAR T-SHIRT for a UK tour and also a FEATURE rockumentary of the tour on 8TV!

Now for our third season we bring you... PESAWAT & COUPLE!!!

Flying high all year round, PESAWAT have headlined numerous gigs and music festivals throughout 2009 as chart-toppers with rock tunes heavily repeated on major national radio stations in Malaysia and Singapore. The New Straits Times: London Calling for Indie Band

ONE of Malaysia's much-loved independent acts, Seven Collar T-Shirt (SCTS), will be braving the cold to play in Britain at the end of the month.

"I'm just going to enjoy myself and have a holiday," said Saiful Ridzuan, better known as Duan, the singer, guitarist and head of the quartet which was formed in 1997.

He said the main reason for going there was to entertain the Malaysian students enjoying their Easter break.

The event is organised by KNUKE (Kugiran Negara ke UK Enterprise), comp-rising former and current Malaysian students studying in Britain.

KNUKE had successfully brought another indie band, Hujan, to Britain last year.
This time, SCTS' label Laguna Records is collaborating with KNUKE, and the band will be performing with label mate Estrella in London (March 26), Brighton (April 1) and Manchester (April 6).

"We'll be in Britain for two weeks, so we'll also be networking there, selling our music, doing promos like radio interviews and chec-king out other bands," said Duan.

"For our sets, we'll be playing almost all of our songs as well as the latest material from our upcoming album. It should be out a few weeks after the British gigs.

"It has more edge than our previous material, more uptempo songs with a slightly new direction."

He credited the band's new bassist, Sim Keng Lee, for injecting some punk ferocity and drummer Adil Ali's energetic thumping style for the album's bite.

Guitarist Muhammad Abdullah and Duan's melodic playing and vocal style give the songs a dreamy resonance, as heard on the Wild Child (Here For You) single, which can be previewed on the band's website (www.myspace.com/scts).

"Lyrically, there's a song about living in a time of war, some on relationships with people and things I read in the papers that affect me," said Duan, who is looking forward to a nationwide tour later in the year in conjunction with the album release.

The 30-year-old musician said he started taking music seriously after the band released its debut album, Freeway, Dreaming & Broke, in 2002.

A degree-holder in music composition from Universiti Teknologi Mara, Duan has also been giving guitar lessons for the last five years.

He is also a commercial sessionist, doing studio work and live gigs and was involved in the P. Ramlee and Puteri Gunung Ledang musicals.

"It's an ideal job for me, I have my creative output with the band and I get to work as a musician."

His big dream is to some day play with the London Symphony Orchestra, but for now it's the British stint.

"I hope these gigs will open our eyes, humble us and that we'll be a hundred times better because of them."

4 days to take off! Estrella and 7 Collar T-shirt is gonna land in the UK in 4 days! I'm glad that we are coming close to this big big day.

We of KNUKE here in Malaysia have gone through a lot. From the tour being possible to impossible to just a dream to possible again thanks to Azran the CEO of Air Asia X. Most of us have endured lack of sleep, and fatigue during day time trying to balance our day jobs and our commitment to KNUKE in order to bring you people in the UK the best Malaysia has to offer.

After countless gig surfing and research, we rate Estrella and 7 Collar T-Shirt as the most qualified for this year's UK TOUR 2009. Estrella has won numerous awards during the first ever 'Voize of Independent Music Awards' (VIMA) and 7 Collar T-shirt being the veterans that they are, has recently launched a kick-ass album after such a long hiatus.

To hype up the tour we have organized a proper media conference to announce our project in Malaysia attracting every possible media coverage that we can grab. All for the love of music. This particular event went successfully well with 20+ media representatives turning up and showing interest!

We had also recently organized a Pre-Departure Gig (Sounds Unite) in collaboration with Laguna to give the local Malaysian crowd a jizz of whats going to happen in the UK. Laguna portrayed professional co-operation and Estrella's performance was amazing. I am definitely convinced that they deserve the tour.

I recently heard over X-fm announcing KNUKE sending Estrella & 7CollarTshirt to the UK. Liyana appeared on 8tv quickie and announced the 'UK TOUR 2009' to the whole nation! Such massive attention that we are getting here in Malaysia.

KNUKE has come so far to bring you the best independent entertainment you can find in our tanah air. This tour will go down as the 1st tour KNUKE has organized. The planning was rough but successful. How to get to Soho KL from Jalan Duta?

Take the Jalan Duta exit into Jalan Khidmat Usaha, where the Kompleks Kerajaan will be on your right + Masjid Wilayah is somewhere on your far left. Drive past Mahkamah Tinggi KL + Menara MATRADE right down to the Persiaran Dutamas T-junction.

Take a left into Persiaran Dutamas, stay on your right. Take the first right, shortly after, into Jalan Duta Kiara, you'll see an appartment, which I don't know what's it called, on your right at the junction.

Drive past the bridge over Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan and stay on your right. The cluster of buildings on your right, soon after the bridge is Solaris Mont'Kiara. Take a right and you will see Soho KL as you drive in.

If you are from Petaling Jaya, it'll be best to take the LDP and take the Bukit Kiara exit. From there, you can either make your way to Plaza Mont'Kiara or if you want to aviod Mont'Kiara's traffic, you can head towards Plaza Damas.

How to get to Soho KL from Plaza Mont'Kiara?

As you turn into Jalan Kiara, you'll find Plaza Mont'Kiara on your left and One Kiara development on your right. Stay on Jalan Kiara, you'll drive past Mont'Kiara International School on your left, Wendy's restaurant on your left. Stay on Jalan Kiara's curve to the right and as you drive further up, you will see both Solaris Mont'Kiara + Soho KL signages pointing to your right, take that right. :o)

How to get to Soho KL from Plaza Damas?

Coming from PJ, you'll see Plaza Damas on your left on Jalan Sri Hartamas 1. Stay on that road and drive right to the end where Duta Nusantara development will be on your left. At the junction, right at the end of Duta Nusantara, take a left into Jalan Khidmat Usaha. Stay on the road until you see a traffic light junction + take another left, into Jalan Duta Kiara, you'll see an appartment, which I don't know what's it called, on your right at the junction.

Formed in 2006, Estrella originally consisted of three members; Ashraf, Syariful Adzwan (Yob), and fronted by Liyana. In May 2006, the Troubaganger acoustic gig marked their first-ever performance, initially winning over the audience at cozy La Bodega KL. However, very soon after the three members were then reduced to the current two as Ashraf decided to leave the band for personal reasons

Armed with their guitars and heartfelt tunes, Liyana and Yob began circulating the local music scene with their own brand of acoustic mPublish Postusic. Numerous open-mic sessions and gigs at notable shows around town followed suit; namely Moonshine, Troubadours, Doppelganger, and No Black Tie, and the band began to generate more attention for the duo from both the audience and the organizers.

In June 2006, Estrella’s first single, ‘Take It Slow’ was featured in Troubadours’s “The Voices Next Door” compilation album, and the song was then taken by RedComm productions as part of the soundtrack for the SunSilk TV series Impian Illiyana which ran for 13 consecutive weeks. Gaining some pretty decent exposure in the media as well as the indie scene, friendships were also made with likeminded individuals and groups along the way, providing them with even more ideas and opportunity to grow musically

Having captured the attention of the Laguna Music masterminds, Estrella further evolved their genre from indie jazz to a slightly more complex sound, with dreamy and spacey after-effects. Under the suggestion of Laguna Music Producer, Jeffrey Little, the strummers now became a light band - with members, Shamsul Idzwan on percussions and Jeffrey Little, himself on drums.

Making rounds at gigs around town as a full band, Estrella’s biggest show yet was the ‘A Seven Collar Sonique Cinematique’ event in early 2007 as one of the opening acts for Seven Collar T-Shirt. In the following month, Estrella performed at the annual KL Sing Song 2007 show, alongside notable singer-songwriters like Azmyl Yunor, Pete Teo and Shanon Shah, which gave the band ample media exposure.

Having worked their way to perfecting their existing and new material, Estrella’s self-titled album was released on the 28th of December 2007. Following the release of the album, Estrella released two singles, ‘Ternyata’ & ‘Stay’, to reach-out to both the Malay & English markets.

Everyday musings and inward thoughts are the main elements in their music, using simplicity as the main staple. Being so new to the scene, Estrella is simply going with the flow, and taking in stride whatever it is that comes their way. Keep you ears peeled for this act, they’re bound to reach and capture the hearts of music-enthusiasts everywhere.

The KUGIRAN NEGARA KE UK ENTERPRISE (KNUKE) was founded in September 2007 by a group of Malaysian music enthusiast studying in the UK. Having gained experience in organising a range of extra curricular activities, from Malaysian cultural events to academic conferences, this group of students were highly credible in their respective Universities and were prepared to challenge their own abilities in a more divested field - the entertainment industry.

Their first project took off successfully in March 2008 when they brought HUJAN to the UK – the biggest UK-wide event organised by the Malaysian students. The highly ambitious tour took the band to several cities around the UK including Liverpool, Cardiff, Manchester & Sheffield along with 500+ units of CDs being sold.

KNUKE (Kugiran Negara ke United Kingdom Enterprise) was formed to continue this challenging effort of bringing our local musicians to the UK. It consists of a supervisory ‘board of trustees’ based in Malaysia overlooking the leadership progress of student members organizing this tour in the UK.

Under event post-mortems and the new management approach, we aim for perfection this year by having a direct partnership with a Malaysian record label Laguna Music – to fine-tune the event in incorporating Laguna’s strength as a band manager and event organiser with our student connections, experience and privileges here in the UK.
